Wrapping around

without comments

There are things so horrible that they’re great.  For instance, F My Life, really bad jokes, and most movies made between 1980 and 1995.  Two examples:

Cobra (1986)

There are even fan sites.

Flight of the Intruder (1991)

My personal favorite “so bad it’s good” movie. Just because it stars one of my favorite aircraft.

It also inspired a level in a video game I seem to have missed, Tom Clancy’s HAWX. I think I’ll correct this oversight soon…

Having flown “Iron Hand” and “Wild Weasel” simulations, I gotta say… that looks fun.  Just remember: “Fighter pilots make movies.  Bomber pilots make history.”

Oh boy, oh boy, oh boy

The official website and the forums.

Here’s the intro for the original:

(Please note: there was no “Deus Ex 2,” no matter what anyone says.  There was an abomination that called itself a sequel, but I refuse to admit its existence.)

The original was pure awesomeness in digital form.  From Gunter complaining about the Pepsi guy screwing him over to the main character trying (and failing) to look normal, it was an awesome game.  (I still use one of the lines quite a bit, due to my wearing sunglasses as often as I can.)  I took great pleasure in finding inventive ways of eliminating one of the more annoying enemies any way I could.  (Mistah Jay See Den-ton, in the fresh!)

{Scene – A large server room. Sirens and klaxons are going off while red lights flash and illuminate the terrified faces of the sys-admins}

For extra comedic effect, read “Johnson” as having Scotty’s voice… and imagine all the explosions from the final battle in Star Trek 6 thrown in for good measure.

Now that I’ve shown my geek cred, I have to highlight Robb’s.  His (first) AR is engraved with the slogan from Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy.  Oh, and he wants this selector switch.  (Though I think a better option would be “Boring” – “Intriguing” – “Interesting,” myself.)

One good reason to keep old equipment around- PC games.  Because you’ll never know when you want to pop a 1999 compilation CD of the Best Games of the 1990s in a computer… until XP decides that you can’t do that.  Now I have to figure out how to get an 8 MB file onto a 1994 IBM 486 with no network card or CD drive.

Crap, I’m gonna have to learn Windows 3.11 again… if it’ll even boot.  All this for a little XCOM.

The Tao of the tape measure.

I’m not passing this on to any of my contractor friends, because the last thing the construction industry needs is thousands of guys practicing these skills.  But I am impressed at this guy’s level of skill.  I love when he flips the radio to a different station.

Excuse me for a moment…

… while I have a little breakdown.

You maniacs! You blew it up canceled it! Ah, damn you!

Okay, I’m better.  What is it with good sci-fi not lasting on Fox?  Not only will all those questions I have remain un-answered, but a good story will get put aside, for a crappy one.  Why didn’t this catch on?  I mean it had everything– girls, guns, gear, girls… seriously, the words ” Eliza Dushku shower scene” should have improved ratings by at least 1 million viewers.

Argh!  So, now all of us geeks who liked “Dollhouse” get to mourn it.  While I can’t lay claim to the same emotional ties Jennifer can, I’ll miss the show.

Wake up, Missster American.

Turns out somebody just found this blog by Googling “Obama Reichsmarks.”  Congratulations on waking up.  “Not that I wish to imply you have been sleeping on the job. No-one is more deserving of a rest. And all the effort in the world would have gone to waste until… well, let’s just say your hour has come again. The right man in the wrong place can make all the difference in the world.”

Now, make sure your wheel-barrow is in working order, I don’t think that carrying a few cubic feet of cash is going to do your back any good.

For those of you who don’t get the post title and quote above.  Who said all that time playing video games was wasted?

Zombieland

without comments

The zombies are awesome: they are fast killing machines and scary as hell. The acting was good, and each character is unique, and each has a different style of taking out zombies. There are comedic points, too. In short– you will laugh, you will cry, you will drool over the guns.

Yes, you drool over the guns. Remember I said each character had a unique way of eliminating zombies? That has to do with the guns: Tactical pump shotguns, coach guns, a Mare’s Leg, and a few moments of full-auto goodness.

There will be moments when you want to yell at the screen (take the tank, the hatch is wide open!) and feel honestly bad for the characters (can’t a man just get a Twinkie?), and cheer for them, too (aww, ye-ah!).

Both thumbs up. Hey, what can I say, even the opening music rocks.

Damnation Alley

with 3 comments

Very good, but little known sci-fi movie. Decent plot, okay special effects, and two very good selling points. The first is the fact that Jan-Michael Vincent and George Peppard get to launch nukes. The second is the Landmaster. Worth a watch, if just for the horrible graphics work done on the sky scenes, and the cockroach scene.

20th Century Fox made two science fiction movies in 1977. They expected Damnation Alley to be a smash; the other movie, not so much. The “other movie” was a little indie flick called Star Wars.
