The weird part is that the driver who put the hurt on the guy in the dog suit pulled over to do it.  Stopping your vehicle to beat down a costumed cop isn’t exactly a sign of mental stability… but, hey, maybe he knew the guy.  “Hold on folks, we gotta make a stop… that’s the bastid who stole my wife!”

You know what surprised me the most about this piece?  Fifty cents a WORD.  I don’t have the reference in front of me, but I remember one of Heinlein’s essays talking about how he negotiated a book sale in the late 1970′s at around seven cents a word.  I’d be interested to know what an entry-level rate is for fiction writing is now-a-days…

Muggers thought they had an easy mark, but they made one major error in that they “failed to notice a ninja, Nathan Smith, standing in the shadows outside the dojo. Mr Smith immediately alerted his sensei, or teacher.”

Make no mistake… he wasn’t standing in the shadows, he was waiting there– waiting for his chance to use his skills for good.  The story ends with the muggers running scared from a group of ninjas (did no-one have a shuriken handy?) only to be caught by police.

I wish I had ninja guardians…

Craig Lancaster wanted to prove that Chicago Police officers are treated the same as others when they break the law, Cook County prosecutors said.  So in a drunken argument with a friend last summer, prosecutors said, the 41-year-old veteran officer shot a gun in the air outside an Ashburn bowling alley where he also worked security — and waited.

Hmm, this sounds familiar…

Ah, now I remember.  But, this guy did get arrested… only to be acquitted at trial.  Glad to know Lady Justice works so well without a blindfold…

Police are searching for the perpetrator of five murders today in San Francisco.  Sunday afternoon, the suspect– described as “a big, dark revolver with hands and legs”– killed five and wounded one in a random attack outside a tavern.  The lone survivor is unable to remember details, but believes the revolver’s last words before shooting him were “… you’ve got to ask yourself one question: Do I feel lucky? Well, do ya, punk?”

The suspect is described by police as a high-capacity semi-automatic revolver, about 8 inches tall and around a foot long.  If you see this suspect– or anything matching the description– please do not attempt to apprehend it, as it is very dangerous.  Forward all tips and sightings to your local police department.

Well, for once, it looks like a gun DID kill someone…

Like his older brother, this kid can get in the damnedest trouble.  As in “wrong place, wrong time, stupid look on your face” trouble.  (sigh)  Well, good thing I was up… lemme go make coffee.

I feel for the kid.  The back seat of a cruiser’s not comfy… err, or so I’ve been told.

My only real observation here is that the guy’s name was Michael Romero… is he any relation to Ric Romero?

Is it just me, or did the guy with the stick do a David Copperfield?  But then this is the organization that “fixed” a hostage situation by just killing everyone…

I want to point out comment #26 by Jim in San Diego.  He links to this article at The Smoking Gun.

Now, when I first began to read this article, I got to the second page before something clicked– Okaloosa County, Fort Walton Beach, Cantrell… holy sh*t I know this girl*.

Allow me to emphasize this: someone I know just made The Smoking Gun for cracking open a can of malt liquor in the back seat of a squad car.  I’m going to quote from the article, just for the giggles:

[A] stranded Cantrell asked Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Mitchell Landis for a ride home to her Fort Walton Beach residence. Landis agreed, but only after checking Cantrell’s purse for any contraband [...] While chauffeuring Cantrell, Landis heard the teenager “open a can of some sort” in the back of the cruiser. “As I looked at my in car video I observed Cantrell drinking out of an unknown can.” Landis stopped his car and, upon further investigation, determined that Cantrell had popped open a can of Steel Reserve, a malt liquor known for its high alcohol content. “When I opened the rear passenger door I observed Cantrell attempting to hide the can between her legs.

Please note the last word in the case report– Case Status: Closed.  You can not get any more “solved” than having a suspect crack open a beer in the squad car while on tape.  Now, for the mugshot:
