Via Uncle, Caleb’s take on why he could never support gun control. I agree, wholeheartedly. In my experience, people who are anti-gun (or anti-anything, really) are driven by fear. Their anti-gun stance is simply a mental defense mechanism to protect them from that fear. All of my friends who were anti-gun (key word were) became pro-gun when that underlying fear (abusive father, fear of their parents divorcing, violent spouse, fear of self-reliance) was removed.
A deeper article is here, but in short, if you can overcome that fear, the person will probably become pro-gun. The problem is that so many of the anti-gun arguments are thought-terminating clichés, and will require a little extra effort to overcome. One tactic would be to show the fallacy of the argument that the anti-gun advocate uses (A cop on every corner, you say? What if I don’t live on a corner?) and help them to learn the truth about the subject.
