You know, there are times when I question the sanity of higher education. For instance, one class I am taking right now is a 3000 (junior-level) “technical writing” course, writing everything from memos to grant letters… just one little problem.
This course seems to be all about relearning EVERYTHING about the English language. Commas, punctuation, how to spell check. How has anyone in a technical field not learned these things by the third year of college?

You would be surprised. I taught mainly 100 and 200 level classes and I was always surprised at how many students (with high GPAs) couldn’t put together a simple sentence. Even the 4000 level classes I taught, I would have people running page long run-on sentences, no paragraph breaks, to two and too errors among others.
