Blades

with 5 comments

Everybody needs a good blade sometimes. Some people carry a pocket knife, some carry a folder, some carry a small sheath knife.

I carry a little Smith and Wesson tanto folder. A little clunky compared to a penknife or a normal pocket knife, but good for cutting, and a decent defense knife; I found mine for $10 at a gun show. Sellers are very open to applications of Rule 17 late in the last day of a gun show. Anything they sell, they don’t have to carry back to the van.

I’m also looking for a good kukri for around the farm use. I’ve found a few, but I’ll look more at the next few gun shows.

A kukri is good for inflicting nasty wounds. For working with woody plants and digging, one NEEDS a Woodman’s Pal, first designed and used by the US Army. http://www.woodmanspal.com/ Made in the USA by people with names like Smith, Johnson and Lopez. Accept no substitutes.

Never been a big fan of tanto blades, then again I recently stop being a fan of serrated edged blades too.

To difficult to sharpen, for me anyhow.

The trick is to sharpen it in three sections, not two, like everybody tries to; main portion on the blade, the angle, and then the rake leading to the point. One reason I love this little folder is that it is a single bevel edge, so I only have to sharpen one side.

Kukri is a pretty good tool, kind of amazing the leverage that shape gives in a cut. Haven’t used the Woodman’s Pal, but it ought to work quite well.

I stopped arguing about blade shapes a long time ago; what works for you, works.
